Spoiled for Great Food and Drink in Glastonbury, Somerset

6 Oct

When we moved to Somerset from London 4 years ago we really did not know a lot about the food the county had to offer.  We were in for such a great surprise.  Somerset is a county proud of its local food and drink and here at Middlewick we are surrounded by the most amazing suppliers.  Within a 10 mile radius we have cider producers, vineyards, cheese manufacturers, vegetable producers, and some great local butchers selling locally sourced meats and poultry.

A large number of the pubs in our area are independently owned and their owners are proud to boast of locally sourced ingredients on their menus.

Here is a list of a few of our favourites and they are just a short drive or a nice bike ride from us here at Middlewick.

The Red Lion West Pennard is our nearest pub in the next village to us of West Pennard.  The building is a beautiful 15th Century Inn.  It serves traditional pub food 7 Days a week. There is a popular carvery on a Sunday. 01458 832 941

Sheppey Inn Godney is well worth the 5 mile trip into what seems like the middle of nowhere. Great place for a drink and the food is excellent.  Make sure and book first as it is very popular in the evening. There is a waterside terrace on the River Brue so makes a nice lunchtime spot on a sunny day.  One of my favourite places to cycle to. 01458 831 594

Rose and Portcullis Butleigh is a country pub in the small village of Butleigh which is 7 miles away.   Very popular for its real ales, they host a real ale festival here in May. The food is very good, especially the desserts. There is no sign outside of this pub so it can be missed. Open for lunch and dinner.  01458 850 287

The Red Lion Babcary is a beautiful thatched pub 12 miles from us. With a cosy bar area with fires always lit on one side and a sit down restaurant on the other side. Menu is always full of local produce. Food served 7 days a week. 01458 223230

The George at Croscombe is the winner of the CAMRA Rural Pub of 2015. They always have 5 Real Ales and 5 local Craft Ciders on tap. Great home cooked food with locally sourced produce. Their pies are the best around for miles. Owned and run by a fellow friendly Canadian, it is worth the 8 mile drive.  01749 342306

The Swan at Wedmore was built as a beer house in the 1700s, the property was subsequently enlarged to become ‘The Swan Hotel’ from the mid 1800s with rooms, stables and coaching yard. Now a bustling village pub with great food and bar snacks that are served all day long 7 days a week. 10 miles away in the very cute village of Wedmore. 01934 710 337

The White Hart is the sister pub to The Swan. Also 10 miles away in the historic town of Somerton. The menu is simple, local and special. The head chef is formerly of River Cottage and he works with local suppliers to create food that shows just how great West Country food can be.   Food served 7 days a week and it is also open for breakfast from 9am. 01458 272273

The Manor House Inn is in the small village of Ditcheat The village is famous for being the home of race horse trainer Paul Nicholls’. The pub has seen its fair share of celebrations from past wins.  Many of the stars, including the most famous one Kauto Star can be found in paintings and photos on the wall.  Enjoy great food while listening in to lively horse racing chat. They do a great steak night on a Tuesday night. Or for something different head there for breakfast around 8am when you may get a glimpse of the race horses trotting through the town. 01749 860276
